The Story of Sergeant William Jasper as he relates to the low country
As you walk down Bull Street in downtown Savannah, Georgia and come upon Madison Square you’ll no doubt take notice to the large memorial celebrating the life and heroism of Revolutionary War hero Sergeant William Jasper. Known for his bravery and patriotism during the American Revolution Jasper’s legacy continues to inspire people today.
Records and sources of Jasper’s origin vary. One states that he was a German immigrant, and another that he was born in 1750 in Virginia and moved to South Carolina. Yet, another states that he was actually born in South Carolina to a family of Irish decent. Regardless, it’s believed that Jasper moved to the Halifax district of Georgia where he was recruited to joined the 2nd South Carolina regiment of the Continental Army where he served with distinction throughout the war. He fought in several major battles, including the Siege of Savannah and the Battle of Charleston.

Jasper’s most famous act of heroism occurred during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in 1776. The fort was under attack by the British and the company flag was shot down. Jasper, without hesitation, rescued the flag. This brave act became the rallying point that set the the American troops on the path toward victory. This act earned him the nickname “The Hero of Fort Moultrie.”
Jasper continued to serve in the Continental Army until 1779, when he was killed in the Siege of Savannah. Despite his short life, Jasper’s legacy lived on, and he became a symbol of courage and patriotism for generations to come.

Madison Square is one of the 22 squares of Savannah, Georgia. It’s located in the fourth row of the city’s five rows of squares. You will find Madison Square located Bull and Macon Streets. It was named for James Madison, fourth President of the United States. The oldest building on the square is the Sorrel-Weed House which dates back to 1840 and has a rich history and lore surrounding the property.
